Frequently Asked Questions

“The Electronic Travel Authorisation is the Home Office’s digital pre-travel permission for foreign nationals who don’t need a visa to visit the UK. It’s recorded against your passport and verified by your airline, train or ferry operator before you’re allowed to board.

You’ll need one if your passport is from a visa-free country — the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and every EU member state among them — and you’re travelling to the UK or connecting through a UK airport where you clear passport control.

British and Irish citizens don’t need one, and neither does anyone who already holds a UK visa or permission to live, work or study in the UK. US citizens and Green Card holders are not exempt. Every traveller — including infants and children — needs their own approved ETA, linked to the passport they’ll be carrying.”

“No. An ETA is permission to travel to the UK, granted in advance to nationals who are visa-exempt — it isn’t a visa and doesn’t replace one.

If your nationality requires a visa, you still have to apply for that separately. And an approved ETA isn’t a guarantee of admission: the final say rests with the Border Force officer who meets you on arrival.”

“Ideally before you book, and certainly before you set off. Most approvals come through in minutes, but a share of applications go for further review, and the Home Office says to allow up to three working days.

There’s no minimum or maximum lead time — an approved ETA is good for two years, so applying months ahead is perfectly fine.”

“Two years from approval, or until the linked passport expires — whichever happens first. Within that window you can visit the UK as often as you like, staying up to six months each time.

Because the ETA is bound to one passport, it can’t be moved to another. Lose, replace or renew your passport and you’ll need a new ETA before your next trip.”

“If your connection takes you through passport control — switching terminals, say, or picking up and re-checking bags — then yes, you need an ETA.

Passengers who stay airside and never cross the border are currently exempt, although the Home Office has said that exemption is being reviewed. Note that the ETA rule applies equally whether you arrive by air, rail or sea.

Sorting your ETA before departure removes any risk of being held up.”

“Yes. You can fill in the form for someone else — a relative, a colleague, a member of your group — as long as you have their permission and every detail matches their passport exactly.

Each person still needs a separate application and a separate ETA, children and babies included.”

“The decision comes to you by email. For most people that’s within minutes; applications that need a closer look can take up to three working days.

An approved ETA is issued digitally and linked to the passport on the application, so there’s nothing to print — your carrier’s system verifies it at check-in. If the application is refused, the email will give the reason, and a UK visa may be the appropriate next step.”

“No. imm4u Ltd is an independent private company with no connection to, or endorsement from, the UK Government, the Home Office or any immigration authority.

We provide an optional, paid assistance service — a guided form, verification checks and human support. Every decision about your application and your entry to the UK is made solely by the UK authorities. You can always apply directly on GOV.UK instead.”
